Static Cling: What's the Attraction?

What in the world is this thing called Static Cling and why does it have such bad separation anxiety?

I used to think that static cling was just the normal thing that happened when you got your clothes out to the dryer. I would pull out my shirt and hold it up and there would be 3 socks stuck to it. Where the fourth sock went...that's a whole 'nother blog entry (LOL).

It almost seems as though this static follows you around and whenever you touch another person, a chair, a door...ZAP!!!! You just got shocked. What you don't want is to have that happen while you are pumping gas at the gas station.  I'll leave it to "Myth Busters" to see whether or not that will start a fire.

After countless seconds of grueling research (that's right...I Google'd it) I found that you can eliminate static cling by doing a few simple things.

1. Wash like fabrics together. That means put your cottons with your cottons and your polyesters with your polyesters. Sure it might look like 1960 Jim Crow segregation in your washing machine, but at least you won't have a pair a knee high stockings stuck to the back of your shirt while you walk around your job.

2. Do your best not place synthetic fibers, like Nylon, into the dryer. You may want to let your nylon clothes hand dry.  You can also go 'old school' and hang them on the line outside in the back yard.

3. Make sure you don't over dry your clothes.  You may want to pull them out a few minutes early. When they get bone dry, that is just the perfect environment for our sticky friend, static cling.

Well, I hope this alleviates some of the charge in on the subject of static cling.  I was shocked when I found out how serious a problem this was. I was hardly able to pull away from all of the research. (LOL)

Stay tuned for more exciting things to wash up in the 'Keep It Clean Chronicles'
